As a result of the global economic slowdown brought
upon by the international financial crisis, it is more important
than ever to improve the trade dialogue between
Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) and Southeast
Asia (SEA) and in so doing work towards diversifying
export destinations for both regions. In order to facilitate
trade negotiation, it is essential to develop cooperation
amongst academic institutions from both LAC and Southeast
Asia to effectively analyze trade trends, tariff barriers,
and rules of origin. Moreover, such academic partnerships
create the knowledge exchange necessary for promoting new
channels for trade and investment initiatives across the two
regions.
For
the past two decades the numbers of foreign investment and
free trade agreements (FTAs) have proliferated in Latin America
and Caribbean region. Despite recent efforts and the progress
that have been made there is still enormous potential for
closer collaboration between South East Asia (SEA) and Latin
America to maximize inter-regional synergy
for expanding the economic relations between the two regions
through enhanced inter-regional linkages.
The
University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC),
the Thai Chamber of Commerce and Inter-American
Development Bank (IDB) jointly embark on a strategic
action plan in order to enhance trade and investment and to
improve the exchange of knowledge and best practices between
LAC-SEA countries.
